A desired material (in powder form) is fed into the plasma spray jet stream, where the temperature is around 10,000K.  Subsequently, the material is melted and propelled toward the prepared substrate (your part's surface) forming a state-of-the-art protective coating. 

Your part remains relatively cool because the energy is used up to melt the material itself.  Plasma spray is used to produce highly advanced coatings on surfaces to provide protection against wear, corrosion, erosion, high temperatures; it can also change the appearance, electrical or tribological properties of the surface, replace worn materials and more.

Ceramic coatings are some of the most popular coatings produced by plasma spraying.  Such coatings are dense, inert and exhibit desirable surface properties in their as-sprayed condition, polished, or finish ground to low Ra.
